Numerous promotional gifts and souvenirs were produced to both develop the image of the Olympiad but also to generate income. Every Olympiad adopts a mascot, primarily as a means of generating income from merchandising. In the case of Munich Aicher proposed a 'Waldi' or dachshund. It was depicted in numerous colour versions and a vast range of materials and produced as innumerable souvenir items. Aicher succeeded in producing a witty and stylish confection which was totally appropriate for the venue and its period. The ‘Waldi’ remains fondly remembered, to the extent that it is still used today when promoting events commemorating Aicher’s work.
